Austin talks about navigating familiar roads in unfamiliar conditions. There are still many hazards on the roadways in the CSRA post-Hurricane Helene.

Austin: The winds and the rains of the hurricane have long left the CSRA, but danger is very seriously among us in places that most of us probably are taking for granted. Sean Granato, for instance, the emergency management director of Columbia County, leaving an emergency meeting right after the storm occurred, almost is killed in a car accident because of a downed power pole that he did not see as he was driving through the very dark roads on his way home after a very, very long meeting. Again, this is the emergency management director of Columbia County. This happened just the day after the storm.
Yesterday in Augusta-Richmond County at the intersection of Skinner Mill and Warren Roads, a terrible accident involving a lady going through an intersection that I’m told she was very familiar with. But again, a log truck or excuse me, a power pole truck, a utility truck carrying a utility pole was stopped in front of her and she apparently ran right up on it. The pole goes through the car, almost killing her instantly. She was not killed, thank God, and remains in critical condition this morning, so we’re told, at a local hospital.
I tell these stories because I want you to understand we’re driving familiar roads in very unfamiliar conditions. Even to this day, there are roads that we are very familiar with that have not been cleared properly. There’s all kinds of debris in the roadways in the on the side of the roads, the shoulders of the roads.
We have to be immensely cautious as we drive around. Also, a lot of large trucks with a lot of unfamiliar drivers that don’t know the ins and outs of the traffic of Augusta on a good day, much less when there’s all this debris all over the place.
Please use utmost caution when you’re out in traffic. Again, familiar roadways are unfamiliar for so many different reasons and very, very well, let’s just say easy routes for most drivers have turned into complicated labyrinths because of the the clearing paths that you have to navigate.
Please do your best to stay off the roads unless you absolutely have to be out there. And if you are driving, use the utmost care and caution. It’s a different world today, no doubt. And that’s the comment, I’m Austin Rhodes 95.1 FM, News Talk WGAC.
