Austin: Congressman Al Green is defiant in accepting a censure yesterday from his colleagues in the US House. The congressman from Texas said he would happily do what he did again to prove his political point. Of course, he disrupted the president's address to congress earlier this week, interrupting him, what, three times. He was warned twice. On the third time, he was escorted out of the room by the sergeant at arms.
And the defiant congressman again says he's happily accepting his consequences, and he feels so strongly about it that he would do it again tomorrow given the opportunity. Well, since you're going to be so outwardly and vocally defiant, maybe it's time for the House leadership and the Senate leadership to remind their colleagues that they can be expelled from the building during such addresses if they continue to act up. That should be the next step. Now that we've kind of been put on notice that members of Congress are willing to disrupt an official address like this, what you tell them is you do it again, you're put out of the room, and you will never be allowed in it during your time as congressman while important speeches are going on. Make the punishment have real consequence.
The censure is fine, but it's only on paper. It's not a lot of consequence. Tell congressman Green if he ever raises his voice again, he will forever be put out of the room when there's official business taking place in in the form of a guest speaker. It really is as simple as that. Give consequence to the action.
Give real detriment to the bad behavior. No doubt that's needed. And that's the comment. I'm Austin Rhodes. 95.1 FM News Talk, WGAC.
