Austin talks about the need for later start times for school sports for a variety of reasons.

Austin: If you have a son or a daughter or a grandchild, or a friend, or a neighbor who participates in the school football program for your middle school or your high school, you probably have run into the same issue that my family’s run into the last couple of years. The start times for the games… Absolutely ridiculous.
Middle school games used to start at, like 4:30 in the afternoon, 5:00. And junior varsity football games were starting at 5:00 for sure. I don’t know about you, but, getting to those games on time is a huge pain in the fanny. Rush hour traffic makes it impossible. Also, most workdays don’t end until 5:00 or 6:00 And in my case 6:00. And it’s just incredibly difficult.
It’s one of the most ridiculous scheduling issues we’ve ever run across. Not to mention the heat of the day, the fact that all these teams are now playing on artificial surfaces. That’s right. AstroTurf. The heat on the field is ridiculous.
These games need to be played as late in the day as possible, and we’re trying to make that happen. Arbitrary scheduling. Don’t. There’s absolutely no rhyme or reason as to why these games have been starting so early in the afternoon. They need to start as late as possible. Varsity football 7:30. These games should also be starting at 7:30, or at least as close to 7:30 as possible.
Trying to get that change made and we’re attempting to collect signatures in support of that for not just the Columbia County school system, but all of our local school systems. Go to the Austin Rhodes Show page on Facebook and sign if you agree with that. We’re not debating the issue back and forth, just signatures. And I’m going to present what we get to the Board of Education, hopefully get some solutions in the very near future.
These boys and the young ladies that participate in cheerleading and the band members deserve better. They deserve to play in as comfortable a temperature as possible. No doubt about that. The later the cooler it is. But also they deserve to have parents, grandparents, friends and supporters that can get to the games and not play them at an unreasonable hour too early in the afternoon.
If you support this, get to the Austin Rhodes Show page on Facebook. We could use your signature. And that’s the comment. I’m Austin Rhodes 95.1 FM News Talk WGAC. [00:00:00][0.0]
