Austin talks about mixing business and politics and how it may be a good thing in the Sheriff’s Race for Richmond County.

Austin: Some say it’s a cliche, but I actually believe there’s some truth to the old adage that you shouldn’t mix business and politics. Bottom line Republicans and Democrats both need sofas, carpet and computers. They drive cars, they buy gasoline, and they eat out at restaurants. There’s no reason for the average business owner to take a definitive stand when it comes to most political issues, and certainly most local political candidates.
That’s why it is such a startling and refreshing change of pace to see the merchants of downtown Augusta come together almost universally, not quite, but almost universally in favor of change at the sheriff’s department. That’s right. Gino Rock Brantley has gotten the open endorsement of several of the key members of the leadership of the downtown business district.
And I gotta tell you, it’s really getting some attention. Not only these business owners have great influence among their peers, they also have great influence among the young people that frequent downtown Augusta.
Now are those folks can actually show up at the polls and vote for Gino Rock Brantley, like the business owners are asking them to? Well, that’s yet to be seen. Today’s election day and we’ll know tonight. But the bottom line what used to be the golden rule in politics to keep business and politics separated, not so much the case anymore.
And particularly in the case to get rid of Richard Roundtree as the sheriff of Richmond County, business owners seem to be coming together resoundingly in the downtown district for sure, saying it is time for a change. God, I hope they listen. And that’s comment. I’m Austin Rhodes, 95.1 FM News Talk WGAC.
