Austin talks about the level two emergency alert from Plant Vogtle on Tuesday afternoon.
Transcript:
Austin: It was a scary alert yesterday, one that I can honestly say I don’t remember ever hearing. A level two emergency established at Plant Vogtle. The local media put on notice that there could be some more updates coming soon. The general public made aware that we had a problem.
Plant Vogtle, a nuclear power plant. What in the world is, at the heart of the situation? Well, for a few tense moments yesterday, we didn’t know. Do we have a reactor problem? Were there complications involving nuclear material?
Well, finally. And thank goodness, pretty quickly, it was established that the fire department at Plant Vogtle, their own firefighting team, got a transformer fire under control pretty quickly and that no, there were no issues with the reactors and no involvement of nuclear material.
It’s very important that we realize and appreciate the incredible amount of public safety, teamwork, and effort that’s put into not just Plant Vogtle, but the Savannah River Site as well. We’ve heard epic stories about their massive security forces and public safety forces, firefighting forces, at both units. But you don’t hear very much active participation of any of those groups actually doing the jobs that they were hired to do.
Yesterday, the Plant Vogtle Fire Department went to work and prevented further tragedy. And if you don’t think it can happen, take a look at power plants in the Soviet Union, the former Soviet Union, and even Japan. Yes, there are some very serious complications that can come up with all kind of power, nuclear power plants. So it’s very, very important that we take the physical safety of these plants as seriously as we possibly can.
And thank goodness gracious, the two nuclear facilities in our backyard are run by professionals who know exactly how to keep things safe and efficient. Nuclear power is a fantastic asset for mankind, but it must be maintained and protected at all cost. And most definitely, the professionals at Vogtle and the Savannah River Site are there to make sure this area is kept safe. God bless them.
