Austin talks about Gino Rock’s victory in the Richmond County Sheriff’s Race.

Austin: Most definitely a celebration is underway in many of our hearts, in many of our minds. But I have to say, I feel like with last night’s victory of Gino Rock Brantley over incumbent Sheriff Richard Roundtree in Richmond County, it’s the end of a long tragedy. It’s not a comedy. It’s not a celebration as much as it is hopefully a recovery from a devastating loss.
For the last 12 years, one of the most important agencies in this area by far has been under corrupt and backwards leadership. And while there have been times when it’s been humorous and there have been times when plenty of times when I’ve pointed and laughed and said, I told you so. I told you so. I told you so. I can’t really be happy over the loss of life that we have had in the CSRA.
Seriously, deaths have occurred because this man, Richard Roundtree, was elected sheriff 12 years ago over a much, much better, more qualified, and professional opponent. And that was Scott Peebles.
So yes, we are celebrating the end of a very bad era in law enforcement in Augusta-Richmond County. And again, there’s plenty of light-hearted humor that can come from that. But I mourn. I mourn for the people who are no longer with us because this man won office 12 years ago. I mourn for the careers that came to an end in Richmond County that should have continued for many years yet to come in law enforcement for that agency. And it’s a shame.
Well, I do feel 5 pounds lighter, two inches taller, and feel like I’m a better dancer. The real reality of this is we’ve had a loss in this area and it’s time to rebuild, and I’m reaching my hand out to anyone that wants to participate in that.
Anything we can do as citizens of this area, we are all connected to that agency because we have loved ones that live here. We live here ourselves. We are Augustans. We are CSRA residents. I don’t live in Columbia County because I’m married to it. I live in Columbia County because that’s where my house happens to be.
I’m an Augustan, and today I’m happier and I feel safer, and my family is better off than it was yesterday. Period. Congratulations, Gino Rock. I’m here for you if you need me. And that’s the comment, I’m Austin Rhodes, 95.1 FM News Talk WGAC.
