Austin’s Daily Commentary – December 4, 2023

Austin: UGA fans, I feel your pain. Very, very sad. The three-peat quest comes to an end. But as sad as all of us feel, can you imagine what it must be like to be an FSU fan? I have to talk to AB about this later in the day.

Florida State has been completely and totally disrespected and completely abused, in my humble opinion, by the ridiculous and hideously inadequate four team playoff system that we're living in the last year, I think, goodness gracious. Next year we go to a 12 team playoff system and it could not come soon enough.

But I have to say, when you're talking about college football and there is such a tremendously different experience that each team has. We're not even going to get into the five power conferences and how different they happen to be. But there's so many teams that play cream puff colleges. Troy State playing a University of Georgia or a University of South Dakota playing a Clemson, that type of thing. It should never, ever happen that way. But it does.

And as a result, you've got uneven evaluations and completely subjective decision-making that goes into these rankings. I will be thrilled to death when next year we get into the 12-game playoff and it's going to fix a problem that's been around for a long time. But you know who's going to gripe then, don't you? 13, 14, 15 and 16. Oh, you know it's coming. You know it's coming.

So maybe a more definitive system as far as ranking these teams go. Make it a point-based system based on quality wins versus quality teams. That might solve some of these problems.

In the meantime, farewell to the four-team playoff system. Never should have been in place. It was a stopgap measure that was better than what we had, but not nearly as good as what college football deserves. You Florida State fans, God bless you.
