Austin talks about Mayor Garnett Johnson and his optimism over the Augusta National taking over The Patch.

Austin: Another Masters tournament is in the history books and the 2024 event will be remembered for so many unusual and exhilarating events, specifically overcoming adversity. The weather Friday. Wow, quite a tale to say the very least. And of course, Scottie Scheffler donning his second green jacket.

I can say though with as much happiness as the out-of-towners had here. There was one guy that I think was smiling better than anyone else when it comes to the locals, and that's Mayor Garnett Johnson. What an incredible week he has.

I had an opportunity to speak to him several times out on the course, taking in the event and all the fun that goes with it. From the very, very beginnings way last weekend up until the very last stroke of play yesterday, Johnson was fully committed.

Now it's easy to be a fan of the Masters. I understand that. What he sees as potentially some of the biggest news that we've had in quite some time. The tremendous commitment that the Augusta National has had to working with those folks over at the Augusta Municipal Golf Course, affectionately known as The Patch, and turning that into a true destination, a showpiece for the city. And wow talking about turning a project around, talking, talking about reclamation of a very difficult property that has been hard over the years to say, to make it something worthy of holding the name of Augusta Municipal Golf Course.

There's so many amazing opportunities here in town to enjoy the game of golf and the very course that has the city's name attached to it. It's really been a sore spot for those who really want the best experience for the game of golf, and also for the city of Augusta and its reputation maintained as the golf capital of the world. He sees the commitment the Augusta National's making. It's unprecedented, and he believes it's going to be one of the greatest attractions the area's ever seen. I share his optimism.

The Augusta National does not play when they make a commitment to a project like this. We'll see. And that's the comment, I'm Austin Rhodes, News Talk WGAC.
