One Dead in Officer-Involved Shooting in Richmond County
A homeless man is dead and a Richmond County Deputy was injured when the two exchanged gunfire late this morning.
Deputies responded to the 1200 block of Ellis Street around 11:30 a.m. to a report of a person with a gun. Deputy Kenneth Mercer and the suspect were injured in an exchange of gunfire.
The suspect, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:46 pm. An autopsy has been scheduled.
Mercer was taken to an area hospital for treatment. His condition wasn’t known.
The GBI has been called to investigate the incident.
