Highway 1 Shut Down in Batesburg-Leesville Due to Flooding
Days worth of rain this week has led to flooding in the Batesburg-Leesville area.
According to Mayor Lancer Shull, Highway 1 is shut down for the time being at the train trestle near Oswald Lumber due to flooding. In one of Shull’s Facebook live posts, he said it looks like the damage from this flooding will turn out to be worse than the historic flood in 2015 in Batesburg, when some areas recorded more than 20 inches of rain.
Around 9 pm Thursday, Shull reported that water was over Highway 1 and Highway 23 in the historic Leesville Business District, due to debris from a fallen tree clogging under a bridge.
Shull said Highway 1 at the train trestle near Oswald Lumber will remain closed most of the day today. South Carolina Department of Transportation and Norfolk Southern crews hope to have the necessary repairs made by 5 pm today.
