City Offices in Augusta Closed Monday in Observance of Juneteenth
Also called Emancipation Day, Juneteenth is the nation’s newest federal holiday. It’s in commemoration of June 19, 1865, the day enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas learned they were free. Juneteenth was first recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law.
Federal offices are closed on Juneteenth, as are state offices in Georgia and South Carolina. Banks will be closed and there will be no mail delivery from the United States Postal Service.
