Bucket List – Do It!
Stop putting off doing things on your Bucket List – Do It!
Formative Years
I discovered Notre Dame football in 1968. I was a 10-year-old 5th grader at Holy Trinity School in Norfolk, VA. And I fell hard right from the start. The Irish’s quarterback was Terry Hanratty. The fellow that seemed to catch most of Hanratty’s passes was a guy by the name of Jim Seymour. I loved everything about them. The uniforms. The traditions. In those days, there was even a 30-minute program that ran the day after they played with the highlights of the game. If you’re old enough, you’ll remember Lindsey Nelson’s famous “after an exchange of punts, Notre Dame took over on their 36-yard line”.
Through the years, and through the years at Holy Trinity and Norfolk Catholic and beyond, as I began to learn more about the institution I fell in love with it too, not just the football team. I have no idea when I began to envision seeing the campus and a game one day, but it was probably before I turned 15.
Finally Going To Go
So, now, fast forward, what, 44 years? I had a friend, about 20 years ago invite me to a game. He would go to one game a year. Where I was in life at the time, and for a variety of reasons, I was never able to make that happen.
As I’ve gotten older, I guess naturally, I’ve wanted to see and experience the things I had always looked forward to doing. Another long time friend, who was aware of my love of the school and the football team had asked me to join them on a weekend trip. One of his sons had transferred from Mississippi State to Notre Dame after his Freshman year. He wrote me earlier this year to remind me that his son was going to be a Senior this year. And if I really wanted to make this happen, this would be the perfect year.
He was right. I decided this was the year! I was crossing this trip off the bucket list. It sat at the top of the list long enough, let’s do it. And so I did. Last week. Don’t let your bucket list sit there. Do it! Cross it off! Have the experience! I was so happy that I did. Want to read more, just click here.
