Jackie M’s & Son And A Philly Cheesesteak
Do you know about Jackie M’s & Son?
Here’s how I found out about the place. I love a good Philly cheesesteak, who doesn’t? I was born in Philadelphia. Parents lived in Camden, NJ, but since I was born in Philly, I can claim the cheesesteak as my sandwich.
Here’s how I like my Philly Cheesesteak, bread, steak, cheese. That’s it. No onions. No peppers. Bread, steak and cheese. And the cheese needs to be white cheese. Not yellow. No Cheez-wiz for me.
How I Discovered Jackie M’s & Son
So, when I first got here, in the 80’s, there was a place on Gordon Highway, Dawn’s Philly Cheesesteaks. I went a few times. It was very good. Tasted authentic to me. Dawn then went away. I then discovered a place on Peach Orchard Rd about 15 years ago. Went there a few times. It had some issues and it too eventually closed down. I was telling someone that story when they mentioned Jackie M’s. Hadn’t heard of it. Usually, when a place I haven’t heard of is recommended to me, and I think no one else knows about it, I’m the last to know about it.
So, I tried it for the first time about seven or eight years ago. I’ll admit to being a little put off by the business model. I placed my order and went back to the car to sit and wait. (There’s no indoor dining). It probably took about 40-45 minutes to get my sandwich. I realized sitting in the parking lot, watching cars come and go, that people were phoning in orders and coming to get them. A lot of people were phoning in orders and coming to get them. That’s why my order was taking some time.
Let’s get to the sandwich. It’s great! Having been once, I’d like to think I’m a little savvier now when it comes to ordering. Although I didn’t call ahead, my order yesterday took between 15-20 minutes to arrive. The sign on the window says that they are NOT a fast-food restaurant. Everything is made fresh. It is. It comes to you piping hot and wrapped meticulously in foil.
Here are a few things you should know. If you’re expecting your sandwich to be the size of a Subway and or Firehouse sub, you’ll be disappointed. The bread is seven inches long. You can add more meat if you’d like, but the bread is still seven inches long. Don’t let that deter you. It’s wonderful. Unless you ask to not have onions, you’ll get onions. Again, to me, it’s bread, steak and cheese.
You should also be prepared for the hours of operation. They’re closed on Sundays and Mondays. They’re open Tuesday-Saturday from 11a-2p, and then from 5-8p. Keep that in mind. I got mine with extra meat (gut buster) it was about $10.
You’ve got to go find it. It’s located at 3308 Milledgeville Road in Augusta, just off Wheeless Road, sort of out by Daniel Field.
