Food Truck Destroyed by Fire at Augusta Food Festival
Augusta’s first Foodees Food and Culture Festival was a huge hit over the weekend. More than 50 food trucks as well as arts and crafts vendors set up shop Friday through Sunday on the Freedom Bridge. Early estimates are that more than 100,000 people attended the three-day inaugural event.
It didn’t end without incident though. Fire broke out late Sunday afternoon at one of the food trucks. Although firefighters responded quickly, the vehicle was a total loss. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Augusta Fire/EMA sent out some cooking safety reminders today, as we head into the busy holiday season.
Cooking Safety Reminders:
- Never Leave Cooking Unattended: Always stay in the kitchen when cooking to prevent accidents.
- Keep Flammable Items Away: Keep items like towels and curtains away from heat sources.
- Use Cooking Timers: Set timers to prevent overcooking and potential fire hazards.
Dangers of Frying with Oil:
- Two-thirds of kitchen fires occurred after cooking oil, fat, grease, butter, and other cooking substances were ignited. Oil can make the fire spread faster and can still cause a fire the next time someone cooks if there’s any residue left on the stovetops.
- Cover the bottom of the pan with just enough oil so your food isn’t submerged
- Add food gently into the pan so the oil doesn’t splatter
- Clean the entire cooking area and countertops so no oil or grease splatter is left on any surface
- In the event the pan does catch on fire, do not use water to extinguish the flames. This will only cause the fire to spread. If you can, put on oven mitts and safely slide a non-glass lid onto the pan to smother the flames and then turn off your stove
- Don’t turn the stove all the way up to cook faster. Food combustion is responsible for most kitchen fires
