Another 9,000 Amazon Workers to Get Pink Slips
More bad news for some Amazon employees. The company announced this morning that another 9,000 workers will lose their jobs in the coming weeks.
Cuts that begin in November and extended into January have amounted to 18,000 so far. The latest round of cuts this morning will impact Amazon’s cloud computing, advertising, human resources and Twitch units.
It’s quite the switch from the massive number of employees that were hired during the COVID-19 pandemic. Amazon was one of many companies that had to ramp up hiring during the pandemic to keep up with the ordering demand from those who were staying home due to the virus.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said in a memo to staff today, “Some may ask why we didn’t announce these role reductions with the ones we announced a couple of months ago. The short answer is that not all of the teams were done with their analyses in the late fall; and rather than rush through these assessments without the appropriate diligence, we chose to share these decisions as we’ve made them so people had the information as soon as possible,”
For now, Amazon is putting construction on its new headquarters building in northern Virginia on hold. Some 8,000 workers are expected to be hired when the first phase of that project begins.
Amazon opened a fulfillment center in Appling in September of 2021. It’s not known if any of the workers there will be affected by the upcoming layoffs.
