Nationwide Recall of Frozen Burritos Sold at Kroger and Walmart
If you have any Don Miguel Foods ready-to-heat-and-eat carne asada burritos in your freezer, don’t eat them.
The Texas-based company is recalling 10,642 pounds of the burritos that were produced September 27, 2023 and were shipped to retail convenience stores and some grocery stores nationwide, including Kroger and Walmart. They were also available through Amazon delivery.
The recall includes 7-ounce individual wax paper packages containing “Don Miguel Hand Made Burrito Carne Asada” with date code D23270 printed on the package. The products subject to recall have the establishment number “EST 20049” inside the USDA mark of inspection.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service says the recall is due to a potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Laboratory testing showed the burritos, that were already sent to some retailers, could contain the Listeria bacteria. There have been no reports of illnesses linked to the burritos, but health officials say since Listeria is a serious foodborne illness, those who have the recalled products should not consume them. It is most likely to sicken people with weakened immune systems. those 65 and older, or women who are pregnant.
Mild Symptoms of Listeria:
- fever
- muscle aches
- nausea
- vomiting
- diarrhea
Severe Symptoms of Listeria
- headache
- stiff neck
- confusion
- loss of balance
- convulsions
Symptoms of the illness usually start within 24 hours after eating the food contaminated with Listeria and usually last 1-3 days. Symptoms are usually mild. If you have eaten food possibly contaminated with Listeria and do not feel sick, most experts agree that tests or treatment are not necessary. Talk with your health care provider if you have questions.
