Man Accused of Killing Wife Now Behind Bars

Richmond County Sheriff's Office

After years of restraining orders and arrests, an Augusta man is behind bars charged with his wife's murder.

Fifty-two-year-old Shawn Gunn allegedly shot and killed 48-year-old Commen Gunn in the couple's home Wednesday in the 200 block of Brandywine Place during a domestic dispute.

Deputies responded to the home just before 10:00 p.m. and tried to get Gunn to come outside.  He refused, but allegedly fired shots at deputies from the front door.  They returned fire, striking Gunn.  He was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries and was released this afternoon.

Gunn was transferred to the Richmond County Jail where he is expected to be charged with Murder and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime.

Commen Gunn's body was found in an upstairs bathroom of the home.  Investigators say she had been the victim of domestic violence for years.  Shawn Gunn has arrests dating back nearly ten years ago for Family Violence Battery, Simple Battery Family Violence, Aggravated Stalking and Obstruction of a Law Enforcement Office.  His most recent arrest was for Driving Under the Influence last year.

The GBI has been called to investigate Wednesday's deadly shooting since Gunn was shot by deputies.  They will turn their findings over to the District Attorney's Office for review.
