White Elephant Gift Exchange Turns Into $175K Lottery Winner
As holiday parties continue before Christmas, many companies still participate in white elephant gift exchange. For a Louisville, Kentucky woman the popular gift exchange paid off big.
If you are not familiar with the gift exchange idea, here is how it usually works.
- Each participant brings a wrapped gift, usually with a spending limit.
- Participants draw numbers to determine the order they go in.
- After the first participant opens a gift, the next person can choose to steal it, or open an unwrapped gift.
According to Fox News, Lori Janes, an office manager and treatment coordinator at Harmon Dental Center in Louisville, said she had initially grabbed a $25 TJ Maxx gift card at a party on Wednesday but that a fellow employee decided to take the gift from her, per the game’s rules. She ended up with $25 in scratch-off tickets, and it paid off big to the total of $175,000.00.
“Once it got to me, it was done and mine to keep. That’s when everyone was telling me to scratch them off,” Janes recalled to lottery officials, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
Janes will take home $124,250 after taxes. The next time your company decides on a white elephant gift exchange, you may want to think about passing on scratch off tickets.
