Austin talks about the Augusta National taking over the Augusta Municipal Golf Course, “The Patch.”
Transcript:
Austin: In an area of the world known for its golf excellence, the Augusta Municipal Golf Course has been less than excellent. And I say that as someone with deep affection and a personal connection to that course, “The Patch” as we have come to know and love it over the years.
It was probably the single most played course in my life, and probably at least 50 rounds there played over, goodness gracious. Well, the years since I was 18-19 years old. I’ve played that course with George Fisher, Matt Stovall, Keith Beckham, God rest all their souls. Neil Lenton, him too. My goodness gracious, so many great and wonderful friends in the industry and so many great friends and neighbors and members of my family.
And so it does not give me any pleasure to say this. The Augusta Municipal Golf Course, The Cabbage Patch, while under the leadership of Red Douglas, it was, effectively run it was not efficiently or profitably run, and it is certainly been mismanaged horrifically, since the Douglas family gave up their leadership over at the club.
Well, step in the Augusta National. They are now officially entering a 50 year lease with the city of Augusta, and they’re bringing in Tom Fazio and Beau Welling to redesign much of the course that they’re going to keep the basic format the way that it is, but they’re going to shore up the deficiencies and certainly tackle those, horrifically under, under kept greens. We’ll just leave it at that, folks.
You can have cheap golf or you can have good golf. Very rarely can you have both. And that’s always been the problem at the Augusta Golf Course, the Cabbage Patch. The Augusta National yesterday confirming they are going to be taking over leadership in a big way for the next 50 years, a 50 year lease. And I cannot celebrate that enough. The Augusta National, coming to the rescue of yet another, redheaded stepchild in this community.
Again, thank you, thank you, thank you. Those who doubt the value of that institution to this city and the people who live here, they just ain’t real bright. Thank goodness many of us are smarter. And that’s the comment, I’m Austin Rhodes, News Talk WGAC.
