Savannah Rapids Park Now Open, Greeneway in North Augusta To Close Temporarily
Savannah Rapids Park has re-opened in Columbia County, 6 weeks after Hurricane Helene caused extensive damage to the park, as well as the Pavilion.
In fact, there was so much damage to the Pavilion that Columbia County officials said more than 200 events that had been scheduled there have either been cancelled or rescheduled.
Like most areas, it was uprooted trees that caused the most damage. A tree fell into the side of the Pavilion. The building also flooded.
Officials say there were already plans in the works to renovate the Pavilion before the storm hit. The effects of Hurricane Helene just made them speed up the process. For now, it’s not known how long the renovations will take or when the facility is expected to re-open.
Savannah Rapids Park Will Have a Few Limitations
The Savannah Rapids Park is now open to the public, which includes the playground, visitors center, kayak rentals and the Bicycle Peddler. If you’re planning to go to the park, be aware:
- The Canal Towpath, which is owned and operated by the City of Augusta, remains closed and blocked off to the public
- The main event center at the Savannah Rapids will remain closed
- The dance pavilion located between the Savannah Rapids event building and the canal remains closed
- The Columbia County Visitors Center will be open from 10 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday.
The Greeneway in North Augusta Will Close Monday
North Augusta Parks and Recreation officials say the entire North Augusta Greeneway, including the sections from the Riverside Boulevard roundabout to the soccer complex and the Riverfront Loop will be closed starting Monday, November 11.
The Greeneway will be undergoing maintenance and clean-up until further notice.
The City of North Augusta will post updates on when sections of the Greeneway will re-open.
