Newly Constructed Waynesboro Truck Route Opens Friday
The newly constructed Waynesboro Truck Route that was built to improve large commercial truck traffic efficiency and safety in Burke County will open on Friday, February 21.
The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) says contractors will open the new route during a ribbon cutting ceremony at 1:30 p.m. near the new roundabout intersection at SR 24/SR 56 and Lover’s Lane.
The new roadway extends from the new roundabout intersection for 0.2 miles on Lover’s Lane, then continues to the endpoint at the SR 121/US 25 intersection with Industrial Drive.
The 2.1 mile roadway and roundabout had a price tag of $4,471,195 and was funded through Georgia DOT’s Transportation Investment Act (TIA) program.
The state’s regions are able to pay for necessary community-selected infrastructure projects through a one-cent sales tax that voters approved.
Newly Constructed Truck Route Should Reduce Traffic Congestion
“The Central Savannah River Area’s regional roundtable of civic leaders chose to include the Waynesboro Truck Route on its 2013-2022 investment list of 84 total projects with the justification the project would improve large commercial truck traffic efficiency and safety by redirecting it to a specially-designated through route on the west side of the city,” according to a news release from GDOT.
GDOT officials say local residents should see less traffic congestion as well as a new direct corridor with increase lane capacity in the area.
