Teen Is In Custody For Murder After Chase That Ends At Busy Martinez Intersection
A teen is in custody today for the murder of a homeless man back in July in Augusta, but his arrest followed a high speed pursuit that began in Martinez.
Lieutenant James Kelly with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office says law enforcement from that department, along with the Southeastern U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force and the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team attempted to serve a search warrant at 310 Sumac Trail in Martinez around 3:00 pm today.
Kelly said authorities were trying to find and arrest 18-year-old Tracy Martin of Tullocks Hill Drive in connection with the Murder of 54-year-old Argie Jones on July 27, 2024. Jones, who was homeless, was found dead in the 1900 block of Ellis Street in Augusta.
“As the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office was arriving at the location, Tracy Martin jumped into a white in color, Mitsubishi Mirage, with another male driving,” said Kelly.
Columbia County authorities attempted to stop the vehicle, and that’s when a pursuit began throughout the county.

Kelly added, “The pursuit ended at Washington Road and Bobby Jones Expressway in Columbia County when the Mitsubishi struck a vehicle head-on.”
Minor injuries were reported in the crash.
Martin was taken into custody and transported to the Charles B. Webster Detention Center and charged with Jones’ murder.
The driver of the vehicle being pursued was also arrested, but charges against him have not been announced yet.
Kelly said this is an ongoing investigation and no other information will be released at this time.
