Word quickly spread that Clarke had suffered a massive heart attack and was on life support in the Intensive Care Unit.

Friends and colleagues shared news of his condition on social media, asking for prayers for his recovery.

Commissioner Tina Slendak confirmed today that Clarke passed away Wednesday afternoon.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Commissioner Catherine Smith-Rice said Clarke was treated for an illness over the holidays, but had appeared to recover. He had even attended a recent meeting of the Augusta Historic Preservation Commission, the week before his heart attack.

Funeral Arrangements Announced

Clarke's funeral will be held at 1:00 pm Monday, February 3, at Thomas L King Funeral Home Chapel on Davis Road in Martinez.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to any animal charity, since Clarke was an avid animal lover.
