FEMA Disaster Recovery Center In Columbia County Closing Soon
A handful of FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers that opened in several Georgia Counties in the wake of Hurricane Helene are closing this week, including one in Evans.
The Columbia County FEMA Disaster Recovery Center that’s been set up at the Columbia County Emergency Management Agency office on Ronald Reagan Drive in Evans will close this Friday.
Hours at the Evans office will be 8 am to 7 pm through December 20.
FEMA officials say its other Disaster Recovery Centers closing this week are in Chatham and Toombs Counties.
“FEMA is still here to support recovery in Georgia. Survivors may visit any open recovery center to get one-on-one help applying for federal assistance, receive updates on their applications and learn about the appeals process,” said Nikki Gaskins Campbell, FEMA Media Relations Specialist.
Anyone in a county affected by Hurricane Helene is encouraged to apply for FEMA disaster assistance. The quickest way to do that is to apply online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov.

FEMA Disaster Recovery Center Still Open in Richmond County
FEMA still operates a Disaster Recovery Center in Augusta at the Hub for Community Innovation at 631 Chafee Avenue.
You don’t need an appointment. You can drop by to sign up for FEMA assistance. That assistance includes only what is necessary to meet basic needs such as a roof, utilities, windows, doors and toilets.
Deadline for Federal Disaster Unemployment Assistance has been Extended
If you lost income as a direct result of Hurricane Helene, you can still apply for federal Disaster Unemployment Assistance.
Those living in Burke, Columbia, Jefferson, Lincoln, McDuffie, Richmond, Taliaferro, Warren, Washington and Wilkes Counties are still eligible to apply until January 7, 2025.
Applicants could be eligible for a weekly benefit of as much as $365 beginning the week of September 29, 2024.
Those in the counties directly affected by Helene must first apply for regular unemployment insurance on the Georgia Department of Labor website at www.dol.georgia.gov. You can also apply in-person at any Georgia Department of Labor career center.
Disaster Unemployment Assistance is a program designed to provide benefits to people who are self-employed, farmers, diversified farming operators, loggers, commission-paid employees, and others who are not eligible under the state’s program in the event a disaster has been declared by the President.
