Martinez Man Sentenced In Stolen Masters Memorabilia Scheme
Richard Globensky of Martinez was hired by Augusta National Golf Club (ANGC) in 2007 to work as a Warehouse assistant in a facility where Masters Tournament merchandise is stored.
Among other things, Globensky helped to maintain records used to conduct post-tournament merchandise audits.
Fast forward two years. In 2009 and continuing until 2022, Globensky stole large quantities of Masters Tournament merchandise from the warehouse and sold it to another party in Florida for sale online.
According to court documents, Globensky loaded the stolen goods into a truck and transported them to an offsite storage facility he maintained in Augusta. The person he sold the stolen merchandise to either came to Augusta to pick it up at the storage facility, or Globensky shipped it via UPS to Florida.
Some of the historical memorabilia stolen from ANCG included:
- Arnold Palmer’s Masters Tournament Green Jacket
- Ben Hogan’s Masters Tournament Green Jacket
- Gene Sarazen’s Masters Tournament Green Jacket
- Masters Tournament programs from 1934 and 1935
- An Augusta National clubhouse trophy
- Masters Tournament tickets from 1934, 1935, 1936, 1937, 1938 and 1939
- Augusta national Golf Club pickard porcelain bowl
- Masters Tournament records from 1942
- 2009 Masters commemorative putter
- Documents and letters written and signed by Bobby Jones
- An Augusta National stock book
- Augusta National unissued share of stock from 1932 hand signed by Fielding Wallace
- Various Masters’ Tournament and Augusta National members gifts from 1964-2007
In all, Globensky was paid approximately $5,305,911 for the stolen merchandise.
During court proceedings, it was revealed some of the money was spent on lavish goods including vehicles, a boat, $160,000 toward Disney-themed vacations, and $32,000 for items purchased at Louis Vuitton.
It all came to an end when Globensky was arrested in April of 2024, just days after The Masters. He was charged in Chicago, since some of the stolen goods were recovered there.
He pleaded guilty to a charge of transporting stolen goods across state lines last year.
Martinez Man Gets Prison Time and Will Pay Restitution
Globensky appeared in U.S. District Court in Chicago March 19 and was sentenced to one year in federal prison. He will also have to pay more than $3 million in restitution to Augusta National Golf Club and face one year of supervised release.
Globensky had already sold his home in West Lake subdivision, with the proceeds handed over to the government.
