Lakeside High School Bathroom Attack Recorded On Cellphone and Shared
A Lakeside High School men’s bathroom was the site of what appeared to be a brutal attack this morning.
There were at least three male students in the bathroom when the incident occurred. One of the students recorded the attack on his cell phone, then shared it with several students. That video shows one student brutally beating another and continuing the attack once the student collapsed.
Authorities say 16-year-old Jahti Martin of Martinez was taken into custody and charged with Aggravated Assault.
Lakeside High School Principal Juliet King sent a letter to parents today, which was also shared with the media.
“In an effort to keep you informed, we are notifying you of an altercation between two students that took place in a restroom this morning during class change. One of the students involved is being held accountable according to the code of conduct and the law,” King said.
She added, “The incident was not directly witnessed by others, however, a video of the altercation was shared with several students. An investigation is ongoing to identify and hold accountable the student responsible for filming the altercation.”
Lakeside High School Incident One of Many This Week
Today’s incident at Lakeside High School follows a series of recent incidents at schools in the CSRA, most related to threats either on social media or made in-person at school.
Just yesterday, at least 10 students at Evans High School were expelled over threats, and earlier in the week two young girls, ages 11 and 12, were charged in connection with online threats at middle schools in North Augusta and Aiken.
Administrators in Columbia, Richmond and Aiken Counties are urging parents to talk to their children about the consequences of such behavior. In some cases students are being kicked out of school without even an option of attending the alternative school.
They also say that any suspicious activity should be immediately reported to an adult or school administrator.
