Seniors for Seniors: The Golden Paws Adoption Event in Aiken

Now that all the gifts have been opened and the kids are back in school and everyone is back to the same old routine, does it feel like maybe something is missing? Maybe you thought about adopting a pet over the holidays. But maybe you felt like you didn’t have time for all the training of a puppy or a kitten. Well, the SPCA Albrecht Center has an event just for you! This Friday, January 5th, the Golden Paws Adoption Event will allow individuals aged 60 and above to adopt a senior pet for just six dollars!  It’s seniors helping senior pets!

Older And Wiser

Senior pets are categorized by the shelter as those being six years old and older. Unfortunately, these seniors face a longer wait for adoption year round, but especially during the holidays. This is a time when potential adopters gravitate towards puppies and kittens thinking they’ve found the perfect gift. Ironically, these same young animals are often returned by their adopters. They simply weren’t adequately prepared for the energy, time, and patience that a younger pet requires.

All the while the senior pets languish in the shelter overlooked. But in reality, they can offer a balance of companionship and independence for those with a lower key lifestyle. They’re often already house-trained, they already understand basic household etiquette and they can make excellent companions for those quieter moments. While they may have a little snow on their muzzle, that maturity can translate into a disposition that’s both affectionate and easy-going.

Older pets can be great for anyone that isn’t necessarily leading a high-energy lifestyle. A laid back older pet can offer affection and enrich your life with their quirky characteristics. I can personally attest to the joy an older pet can bring you in their quieter moments. Plus, knowing that you’re giving a senior pet a second chance at life can be so rewarding. It gives you the opportunity to make their golden years better for them while in turn they can enhance your life as well. It’s a win-win situation.
