School Zone Cameras Go Live Soon in Burke County
School zone cameras should prompt drivers to pay attention to the speed limit on the Highway 25 Bypass near Burke County High School. The message is clear. Slow down, or get a ticket.
The cameras were installed toward the end of the 2023-24 school year, due to the hundreds of speeding violations recorded in one day alone near the high school when a study was conducted by tech company, Altumint.
The Burke County Sheriff’s Office says one camera was installed at either end of the school zone, and officials hope they’ll serve as a reminder to drivers that they need to slow down.
Drivers were given a 30-day warning period once the cameras were turned on last spring. They haven’t been on since schools closed for the summer, but the Burke County Sheriff’s Office is letting drivers know they’ll be turned back on as of August 5. Cameras will be active Monday through Friday from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm throughout the school year.
School Zone Cameras Will Result in Fines for Speeders
Drivers who travel more than 10 miles per hour over the speed limit in the school zone will be cited.
Altumint, the company overseeing the enforcement services, will mail the citations to the registered owner of the vehicle and collect the payments once they are approved by the Burke County Sheriff’s Office.
Operation Southern Slow Down is Still in Effect Through July 21
A reminder that driver’s speeds are being closely watched in 5 Southern states this week including Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Florida and Tennessee.
Operation Southern Slow Down is a multi-state initiative held annually in conjunction with a partnership between area law enforcement and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Troopers are out this week in full force enforcing speed limits and watching out for aggressive drivers on the roadways in those 5 states.
In Georgia alone, the number of speed-related fatalities have increased almost every year since 2013.
