Midtown Tavern: A Review
So last week we tried a new spot, the Midtown Tavern on Central Avenue in Augusta.
It’s been open for a while now, but there have been a lot of restaurants in that location over the last few years… with Southbound being the most popular.
At one point it was a pizza place, and then, it seems to me I was there at some point over the last nine months, and it had a different name.
Now, it’s the Midtown Tavern.
Midtown Tavern In Augusta
We went for a couple of reasons. First, we love trying the new spots. We’ve lived here for 40 years, downtown. We’ve seen restaurants come and restaurants go. We’ve seen many of our favorites stay, some of our favorites go. But we love new and locally owned.
The other reason we went is because it came with a recommendation, but more on that later.
The structure of the building hasn’t changed over the years, the bar, as it was years ago when it was Café DuTeau, is still on the left as you enter. There really haven’t been many structural changes through the different incarnations. The atmosphere is nice, minimal but nice. We had 7pm reservations on a Friday and although the back room was seemingly busy with a couple of large tables, there wasn’t much action in the front dining room.
It’s a small menu, and I’m not saying that to be disparaging, many of the best places have a limited menu. As a matter of fact, a large menu, in my experience, usually means nothing is cooked very well. In the end, we both sort of ordered off the appetizer menu. She had a salad and pimento cheese with pita chips, I had wings with spinach and artichoke dip with pita chips. For $15 I thought 10 wings was generous. I enjoyed the dip also. She liked her choices, although she did say that the next time she would ask for dressing on the side as she is not a fan of a lot of dressing.
The reason I mention what I ordered is because the recommendation I got to go there came with a recommendation of the burger. I got there, and I didn’t feel like a burger, although I did see one delivered to another table and it looked really good.
I hope the Midtown Tavern is there for a long time. I love having restaurants in that section of Augusta. I do think the atmosphere and menu are perfect for a younger audience that wants to get in and then out to carry on with their evening.
Should you go, let me know what you think.
