More and more people are considering 2nd jobs. It’s all about having to fend off inflation. We talked about it on the show this morning.
A new survey from Qualtrics International says that 38% of workers have looked for a second job. Another 14% are considering looking for a second job. The survey also says that 18% of workers have relocated to an area of the country that has a lower cost of living. An additional 13% have a plan to do so.
Inflation has created severe problems for most US households, according to the survey. There is a bit of good news when it comes to lower gas prices, which fell almost 5% in September. Everything else it seems like is still going up. Groceries climbed 0.7% last month alone, putting the year-over-year increase to 13%. What specifically is more expensive, cereal, chicken, milk, butter, cheese, and fresh vegetables. All of the good stuff.
Shelter, which accounts for about 40% of the core increase, climbed 6.6% over the past year, the fastest in 30 years. Rents were up 0.8% month over month, which means rents are up 6.7% year over year.
Another issue not helping with all of this is earnings. The Labor Department said that last week the average hourly earnings for all employees declined 3% in September from the same month a year ago. Looking at it on a monthly basis, average hourly earnings dropped 0.1% last month when accounting for the inflation spike.
If you’ve been out to eat, or out to the grocery store none of this is surprising news. It’s really hard these days to get in and out of a grocery store spending just a few dollars. Almost any run, is going to run you between $40 and $80 dollars.
The government said last week that the CPI, the Consumer Price Index is keeping the rate of inflation at 8.2% on an annual basis.
Are you one of the people considering a 2nd job? Are things getting that tough? What would you do?
