Three people were killed when two vehicles collided head-on Friday night on Deans Bridge Road.

The Richmond County Sheriff's Office says the incident began just before 8:00 pm when a Blythe police officer attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation.

The driver reportedly fled on Deans Bridge Road, crossing over into oncoming traffic where it hit another vehicle head-on. The vehicle with the three occupants burst into flames. Coroner Mark Bowen says positive identification still has to be made.

Three People Killed When Two Vehicles Collided

The driver and two passengers in the fleeing vehicle were killed in the crash. Their identities have not been released yet.

The occupants of the other vehicle were taken to Wellstar MCG for treatment. It's not known how many people were in the vehicle or how seriously they were hurt.

All southbound lanes of Deans Bridge Road near Etterlee Road were shut down while emergency crews were on the scene.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating.
