Washington County Deputy Crashes in Downpour
A Washington County deputy was involved in what officials say was a serious accident last night while responding to a backup request from another deputy.
Sheriff Joel Cochran said a sudden, intense downpour created hazardous driving conditions. While trying to get to the scene, the deputy lost control of his vehicle, it veered off the road and slammed into a tree.
Washington County Firefighters had to extricate the trapped deputy from the wreckage.
He was taken to Wellstar MCG in Augusta, where he underwent surgery for his injuries. The deputy’s name has not been released.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with our deputy and his family during this difficult time. We are grateful for our firefighters and medical personnel’s swift response and professionalism. The safety and well-being of our deputies are of utmost importance, and we will conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident,” said Cochran.
The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash.
