Update: New Details on Burke County Child’s Death Monday
The Burke County Sheriff’s Office has released more details about the death of a 1-year-old child Monday in the 600 block of Winter Road.
Deputies were called to the home at 12:45 pm, along with Burke County EMA, regarding an unresponsive child.
A news release today says, “Preliminary information provided to deputies was that the child was left unattended for some time and while unattended the child fell into a hole that had been dug in the back yard of the Winter Road address,” according to the release.
The hole was an estimated three to four feet deep and was filled with water.
When they arrived, deputies said the child was found face-up and unresponsive. Life-saving measures were underway on the child, now identified as Addlyn Stevens.
Addlyn was pronounced dead after arriving at Burke Health a short time later.
“After thorough examination of the scene, Alisha Stevens, 34-years-old, of Sylvania, GA, the mother of the child, was arrested and charged with one count of Murder in the Second Degree,” according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.
According to the arrest warrant, Stevens was grilling and not watching her child. It states her criminal negligence “caused the death of her daughter by not watching her when the child “ran around the property.”
Stevens was taken to the Burke County Detention Center where she is being held without bond.
Officials say the investigation is still ongoing and no other information is being released at this time. Investigators are awaiting autopsy results as well as toxicology reports.
