I-16 Shut Down Between Atlanta and Savannah
An interstate that connects the Atlanta area to the Georgia coast is closed in both directions after a crash knocked a bridge offline.
The Georgia Department of Transportation said today a detour is in place for the I-16 bridge. The agency says a dump truck hit the bridge this morning, causing it to shift about six feet. The agency shared pictures on social media that show the bridge dislodged from its concrete base.
I-16 is the main route between metro Atlanta, Savannah and Hilton Head Island in South Carolina.
Officials say the affected area on I-16 won’t reopen until at least late tonight.
