Downtown Augusta Will Now Have Extra Security Says Mayor
Downtown Augusta is safe, says Mayor Garnett Johnson.
A week ago, Johnson commented after an early morning shooting Saturday at 10th and Broad Streets left three people injured, including one of the alleged shooters.
He said the area is safe, despite concerns from downtown business owners and residents alike in the wake of late-night violence.
Johnson issued a statement today encouraging residents and visitors to head downtown to enjoy the restaurants and night life, adding additional security has been added.
“The weekend is here! We have exciting events downtown, great restaurants to try, and lots of fun to be had. Please know our downtown is safe. Starting tonight, you will see increased security and patrols by our Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, led by Sheriff Richard Roundtree, and some additional help by our state partners at Georgia State Patrol. These patrols will be downtown and throughout our city. As a reminder to our parents, most downtown restaurants stop serving food at 10 pm. Minors should be accompanied by an adult after that time. Those who enjoy our bars and clubs, please enjoy safely, but remember to make plans for a designated driver or utilize a rideshare program. Enjoy, and have a wonderful and safe weekend. We’ll see you downtown!”
Downtown Augusta Shooting Injured Three June 9
Gunshots rang out early that Saturday morning, causing chaos when bystanders ran to seek cover.
The incident reportedly began when 19-year-old Amazing Lee Blessed Brigham and several others exchanged shots at 10th and Broad Streets. Two bystanders were wounded.
Three off-duty Richmond County deputies were working special assignments at businesses nearby, heard the shots and quickly responded.
They said they saw Brigham allegedly holding an assault pistol, and two of them returned fire, striking Brigham. All three shooting victims were taken to an area hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries.
Roundtree credited the deputies for saving lives with their quick response to the scene.
Authorities said multiple weapons were found at the scene, and at least seven vehicles were hit by the gunfire.
Earlier this week, authorities arrested 23-year-old Seven Whitfield and also charged him in connection with the shooting.
The GBI was called to assist with the investigation. So far, there’s no word on what caused the violence.
The deputies who were involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave with pay, which is standard in an officer-involved shooting.
