Shots fired into a crowd at 10th and Broad Streets early this morning sent 3 people to the hospital, including a gunman.

The Richmond County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene at 1:15am today to a reports of shots fired.

When deputies arrived, then found at least one person down.

An initial news release early this morning said there was one shooter involved.

"Upon arrival, deputies located a male suspect with an assault rifle who had opened fire into a crowd of people, striking an unknown amount of people," according to Sgt. Walter McNeil of the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff Richard Roundtree Held a News Conference to Comment on the Shooting

Sheriff Richard Roundtree released more information about the shooting during a news conference this afternoon at 3pm. That's when he announced there were two males involved.

Roundtree said the incident started with the males, both armed, firing shots at one another on the crowded sidewalk at 10th and Broad Street. One of the suspects fired into the crowd of bystanders.

Some deputies were working a special assignment at nightclubs nearby and heard the gunfire. Roundtree said they quickly responded and shot one of the suspects. He was taken to Wellstar MCG for treatment of his injuries. His name and condition have not been released.

The two who were injured in the crowd were also taken to Wellstar MCG for treatment of what officials said were non life-threatening injuries.

Roundtree said a massive amount of shots were fired during the incident, but he wouldn't say how many.

He also declined to give the names and ages of the two who opened fire on the sidewalk.

"This was a total disregard for public safety in yet another act of violence in Richmond County," said Roundtree.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called to the scene.

No other information is being released yet.
