Richmond County Deputy Charged with Deadly Burke County Crash
A Richmond County deputy was charged today in connection with a March 2023 crash in Burke County that left an elderly man dead.
The Richmond County deputy involved was identified as Ty Dailey. Authorities say he was driving an estimated 90 miles per hour in his patrol car in a 55 mph zone, on his way to training, when he crashed into another vehicle driven by 75-year-old Jay Fager of Blythewood, South Carolina.
The crash was reported at the intersection of U.S. 25 and Cohen Road.
Charges Against Ty Dailey
The Burke County Sheriff’s Office says Ty Dailey surrendered to authorities there this morning and was charged with Homicide by Vehicle 2nd Degree and Driving in Excess of the Posted Speed Limit.
Dailey will attend a bond hearing later today.
The Cause of the Fatal Crash
An investigation revealed that Fager had stopped at the intersection, but didn’t yield and crossed in front of Dailey’s car, causing the crash. Dailey’s speed wasn’t revealed at the time, but Fager was found to be the at-fault driver.
Fager and his wife, Donna, were taken to an area hospital for treatment. Fager died as a result of his injuries.
The case was forwarded to the Burke County State Court Solicitor’s office for further review.
The Georgia State Patrol was also involved in the investigation.
