Rory McIlroy Files For Divorce
Sadly, we learned yesterday that on Monday, Rory McIlroy filed for divorce from his wife of seven years. He and Erica have one child, a three-year-old girl named Poppy.
These times are never happy. They’re never easy and usually, they don’t come out of the blue and overnight to the participants involved. I’ve heard more than one person say that they just saw them all during the annual par 3 tournament here in the town, the Wednesday before the Masters. Yep, you did. But none of us have or should have any idea what goes on behind the scenes.
Rory McIlroy’s Sunday Interview on CBS
I will say this, as Amanda Renner was interviewing Rory on CBS immediately following his win at the Wells Fargo on Mother’s Day Sunday, I realized as it was taking place that Rory talked about his mother but didn’t say a word about the mother of his child, his wife, Erica.
It reminded me of the times you’ve seen actors and actresses forget to single out their significant others when accepting awards. Seems harmless, and most of the time, there’s no harm done.
Apparently, this was different. Interestingly, now with hindsight, it’s curious that Amanda didn’t bring up Erica and Poppy. Unless, before putting the microphone in his face, she was told, “not to ask about his wife”. I know Amanda, asking about his wife and child would be a natural thing for her to do.
McIlroy’s Team Asks For Privacy
Rory is playing in a major championship this week. He’s speaking to the press. His team has asked the media to respect his privacy. I get it. We don’t cover golf tournaments to discuss the private lives of the players. We’re there to cover the golf tournament.
Do conversations organically morph into personal issues? Absolutely. It’s natural to ask Scottie Scheffler about his new baby. And Scottie will tell us as much as he’s comfortable telling us. But when the topic is not pleasant, and the subject has asked for the topic to not come up, I have no problem with that.
There are three human beings involved in this, more really. One of them, a three-year-old child that has no idea what’s going on. That’s who I’m thinking of at this time. Having gone through this in a very less public nature, my thoughts are with everyone involved. Except the lawyers.
