Aiken County Sheriff's Office

Jamilla Smith's remains, found in a wooded area off Silver Bluff Road months after her disappearance, have been positively identified.

The 30-year-old mother of 2 called 911 December 2 and told the dispatcher that her former boyfriend, Daniel Harmon, had broken into her Aiken County home and was chasing her down the street.

The dispatcher reported hearing Smith screaming and a male ordering her to get into the car. They heard Smith say, "You hit me." A search for Smith then began.

The Search for Jamilla Smith

Harmon was taken into custody December 5, 3 days after Smith's disappearance, and was charged initially with Kidnapping and Domestic Violence. Later in the month, Harmon was charged with Smith's murder, even though her body had not been found.

In April, Harmon's cousin, Bryan Alexander Hampton, was arrested and charged with Accessory After the Fact to Murder. It was believed Hampton knew about Smith's murder and helped Harmon dispose of the remains.

Earlier this month, Aiken County authorities made a third arrest in the case. Investigators charged 46-year-old Clyde James Hendley II of Bath with Accessory After the Fact to Murder. He is also believed to have helped Harmon dispose of the remains. Investigators say they found evidence that Hendley's car was used to move her body.

Positive Identification was Made

Today, Aiken County Sheriff Michael Hunt confirmed that the remains found on Silver Bluff Road have been positively identified as Jamilla Smith. An autopsy has been ordered.

"This investigation began in December after Jamilla was reported missing. Daniel Gabriel Harmon, Bryan Alexander Hampton Jr., and Clyde Hendley II were arrested as a result of this investigation. As this investigation continues, information will be released as it becomes available," said Hunt.
