Hephzibah murder suspect taken into custody in McDuffie County

A Hephzibah murder suspect who was wanted for the recent death of a Grovetown man is now in custody.

The Richmond County Sheriff's Office says 38-year-old Bennelle Evans of Augusta was found in McDuffie County today. He was wanted for the April 21 shooting death of 24-year-old Gregory Campbell of Grovetown.

April 21 Murder at Benson Apartments

Richmond County Deputies were called to the 300 block of Williamsburg Drive to a report of a shooting at the Benson Apartment complex.

They found Campbell with at least one gunshot wound. He was taken to Wellstar MCG where he died as a result of his injuries.

Investigators said they were able to identify a suspect in the case and obtained warrants for the arrest of Bennelle Evans.

Evans Was Taken into Custody Friday

The Richmond County Sheriff's Office released a statement today announcing that Evans had been taken into custody.
"On May 3, Bennelle Evans was located in McDuffie County and arrested on the charges of Murder, Aggravated Assault, Possession of Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime."

The Sheriff's Office thanked the U.S. Marshal's Southeastern Task Force and the Georgia State Patrol for their assistance in apprehending Evans.
