Clerk of Court in Colleton County Resigns after Jury Tampering Allegations
The woman who served as Clerk of Court in Colleton County announced her resignation today during a news conference held outside the courthouse where convicted former attorney Alex Murdaugh stood trial for 6 weeks last year.
Becky Hill became the focus of an investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division after being accused of trying to sway the jury to deliver a quick verdict during Murdaugh’s murder trial, reportedly to boost sales of her new book about the case. The investigation also focuses on allegations of Hill using her elected position for personal gain.
Statement from Hill During Today’s News Conference:
“My resignation as Clerk of Court will be effective immediately. I will now be able to focus on being a wife, a mother and a grandmother.”
Statement from Hill’s Attorney, Justin Bamberg:
“Today is not a response to anything with any investigation. Today is about the people of Colleton County.” Bamberg said Hill would not address any questions regarding investigations into her conduct.
Behind the Doors of Justice
Hill wrote a book called “Behind the Doors of Justice” which came out after Murdaugh was found guilty of the murders of his wife and son in March of 2023. She later admitted she plagiarized parts of an insider book about being clerk of court during the Murdaugh trial. Hill apologized and the book was withdrawn from publication.
Co-author and Evans resident Neil Gordon said he had no knowledge of the plagiarism and announced then that sales of the book would end.
“This has blindsided me. Journalism has been my life’s work; my credibility and integrity are paramount to everything I do. I can’t be associated with anything like plagiarism and will no longer partner with Becky Hill on any projects,” said Gordon.
Gordon’s Reaction to Hill’s Resignation Today
“A South Carolina Law Enforcement Division agent interviewed me Friday morning. They expressed a great deal of concern about Becky possibly using her office for personal gain. In their questioning of me, they were honing in on how many different times Becky did book signings, interviews, and speaking engagements during the workday. I sincerely hope her resignation lessens any potential action against her, and that it restores public trust in the office of clerk of court,” said Gordon.
Gordon said that he will be announcing a large donation to charity next week, adding that net profits from the book sales will be donated to a good cause.
