Rezoning Meetings Planned for Columbia County Students Who Will Attend Different Schools in 2024
The 50-year-old Westmont Elementary School building off Oakley Pirkle Road in Columbia County was torn down at the end of the 2021-2022 school year, paving the way for a new $35 million school on the same site.
Columbia County School District officials say the new state-of-the-art 122,000 square foot facility should be finished and open when the 2024-2025 school year begins. The two-story brick building will be double the size of the old school and will be able to accommodate roughly 875 students. The design of the new school is similar in layout to that of the last five newly constructed elementary school facilities including Evans Elementary (2013), Martinez Elementary (2015), Parkway Elementary (2016), North Harlem Elementary (2019), and Grovetown Elementary (2019). Westmont Elementary students have been temporarily placed at nearby schools since construction on the new building began.
A series of public presentations to propose student relocation plans for the next two school years will begin next week and continue through mid-November. School district officials will provide information on the planned decommissioning of South Columbia Elementary School at the end of this school year, to prepare for the opening of the new Westmont Elementary building in August of 2024. Information will also be provided on the opening of the new North Columbia Elementary School for the 2025-2026 school year.
