Manhunt is Over, Juveniles Inmates in Custody in Burke County: Update
A manhunt is over now that juvenile inmates are in custody in Burke County.
Sheriff Alfonzo Williams has confirmed 15-year-old Corinithian Newton and 14-year-old Brandon Davis were apprehended on Knight Road a short time ago without incident. This follows an hours-long search for the pair after they allegedly overpowered a Jenkins County deputy who was transferring them to the Richmond County Youth Detention Center early this afternoon.
Information Originally Released Today from the Burke County Sheriff’s Office
The Burke County Sheriff’s Office says deputies rushed to Highway 56 and Knight Road near the Richmond County line after getting the call at 1:30 pm. They say the inmates were being transported from the Millen courthouse in Jenkins County back to the Regional Youth Detention Center in Augusta when they overpowered Deputy Milo Perry and hit him in the head with a gun. Authorities say the inmates escaped with the deputy’s .45-caliber handgun and issued the following alert:

“Burke County Deputies are currently out at Highway 56 and Knight Road in search of 2 escaped inmates from Jenkins County. The two individuals are armed and dangerous. Citizens in the area please lock your doors and report any suspicious individuals to 911 immediately. More information will be provided as it becomes available.”

When Burke and Richmond County authorities got the call, Highway 56 was blocked at Highway 23 where officers were combing the area.

Schools suspended transportation to the manhunt area until it’s safe.
- Students residing in the area will be returned to school and parents will need to pick them up with proper identification
- Bus #s: 12-86, 17-52, 18-74, 17-50, 16-03. If the area is not cleared before night run: 16-03, 18-72
- Here are some recommendations:
- If you live near Knight Road, Ponderosa Road or Highway 56 No, stay indoors and avoid the area
- If you are expecting a student who lives in the manhunt area, be prepared to pick them up from school
- Bring proper identification for pickup
