Augusta Grandmother Charged After Toddlers Sickened by Meth
A Richmond County grandmother is behind bars in connection with the recent hospitalization of her one and three-year-old grandsons.
The children’s mother said she found her sons foaming at the mouth when she returned to the family’s home Saturday on Avondale Drive. The children were taken to the hospital after having seizures and the mother reportedly told officials she thought they might have gotten into some rat poisoning. She later recanted that story and told officials it’s possible the boys had gotten into some meth in the home.
An investigation led to the arrest of the children’s grandmother, 48-year-old Laura Hutto Burnett, who is in custody charged with multiple counts of child cruelty, possession of drug-related objects and maintaining a disorderly household.
Deputies say the home was filled with thousands of roaches. The mattresses in the children’s bedroom were covered in urine, feces and mold. Officials say they also found drug paraphernalia, hypodermic needles, glass pipes and beer in the children’s room.
