Demolition on James Brown Arena Begins in Augusta
In approving the construction of a new facility, the Coliseum Authority aims to create a revitalized entertainment district in the heart of Augusta.
“This is just the tip of the iceberg,” said Brad Usry, vice president of the Coliseum Authority, in an interview with WRDW-TV News 12. “Once we get this area open, this is going to be a game-changer, not just for downtown but for all of Augusta.”
Augusta business owners, including Allen Soto of Pineapple Ink, are optimistic about the new event venue’s ability to create a dining and entertainment destination in Augusta.
“We are excited for people to come in from out of town and discover Pineapple Ink because we always want to put our best foot forward and show people what Augusta is all about and hopefully earn their future business,” Soto said.
The original James Brown Arena opened in 1980. As performances grew more elaborate and the building needed repairs, Augusta officials advocated for a new facility that would better accommodate future uses for the structure. The new complex will have more than 10,000 seats and host multiple events ranging from hockey and basketball games to concerts and horseback riding competitions.
