A New Mural Full Of Soul And Golf Is Now On The Walls Of Downtown Augusta
It’s time for a fresh new start for this wall. Emily Rahn is the 5th person to display her artwork for the Revolving Mural Project in Downtown Augusta.
Emily Rahn is an Augusta local, who started her art journey at Lakeside High School, where she began selling her artwork. Emily says her mom, who encouraged her to sell her art, has been her biggest fan throughout her whole art journey and has gotten her to where she is today.
How’d This Project Come About?
Emily took a mural class at Augusta University and loved it, that’s when she shared the idea of there needing to be more murals dedicated to golf in Augusta!
“Why don’t we have more golf [murals]? I grew up playing golf, so I guess it’s always kind of been a part of me,” Emily said.
Through this class, she connected with Addison Nidday, the visionary behind the Revolving Mural Project, who took her up on that suggestion, by inviting her to be a part of this project. Addison Nidday is also known for his artwork around the CSRA, such as the painting on the outside of the Giant Augusta Cup.
“This is my first one [Mural], which is like such an honor, you know because I grew up here. I grew up loving the tournament that’s here, the Masters, and I wanted to incorporate [that]. You see the mural when you see the golf ball, you see the microphone, I wanted to incorporate all of the talented musicians within the area because we are essentially like the soul city of Augusta, you know, we want to keep it funky,” Emily said.
As you can see the mural is full of life with bright colors and intricate touches that certainly represent Augusta.
“That’s kind of my art style. It’s just a pop of color and just fun and funky and so I just wanted to do something different,” Emily said.
It took Emily no time to get her mural up. She started the painting on Easter Sunday and finished around 6 pm on Monday.
“We started Sunday afternoon and then we worked probably for six hours. And then on Monday, we spent most of the day, painting and just doing touch-ups. But yeah, I took a total of about 12 to 13 hours,” Emily said.
While they were a bit hesitant, Emily’s family joined her downtown to help paint some of the mural – she assured them that it would be just fine!
“Like, it’s okay to paint this and I’m going to give you the paint and you’re going to paint this and it will all be okay,” Emily said to her family.
Emily’s piece will be displayed on the wall until around July, but that won’t be the last of her artwork you will see. Emily will also be painting a storm drain mural for Richmond County in May.
