Increased Demand for Food at Local Salvation Army’s Center of Hope
The Salvation Army Center of Hope in Augusta is in urgent need of food. They also need help in the kitchen to meet the increased demand for meals at the facility at 1833 Broad Street.
Center of Hope officials are asking for help from local restaurants, businesses and community partners to address a critical shortage of kitchen staff. They also need help with the increased demand for ready-to-serve meals.
Salvation Army Center of Hope
The Center of Hope’s soup kitchen serves, on average, 140 meals a day, mostly to those staying in the shelter. Since last October, The Salvation Army of Augusta has provided over 60,000 meals to those in need to ensure that no one goes hungry.
A hot evening meal is available 365 days a year to anyone in the community who needs food. Dinner is served at the Center of Hope from 5:30-5:50 pm Monday-Saturday, and from 4:00 to 4:20 pm on Sundays. The Center of Hope is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Their services are for individuals and families with a documented need for housing. They also provide crisis intervention and case management.
“The demand for food has increased dramatically recently. With the help of the community, we will be able to continue to meet the demand head-on so that no one who comes to The Center of Hope goes hungry,” said Olga Gonzalez, Director of Social Services at the Salvation Army of Augusta.
Monetary Donations
In addition to ready-to-serve meals, The Salvation Army of Augusta is also asking for monetary donations to feed those in need. Officials say $5 can provide two meals at The Center of Hope. The Salvation Army of Augusta is also in need of non-perishable food items anytime, thanks to a 55% increase in food expenses.
