South Carolina Man Loses Everything After Being Told He’s Dead
A South Carolina man has literally lost everything. Why? He was told that he was dead! One little mistake has turned his life upside down. This story is absolutely crazy. Shane Melton lives in Charleston, South Carolina. The Social Security Administration declared Shane dead by mistake. Well, this mistake has literally cost Shane everything.
According to Newsweek, Shane has lost his job. He had his ID confiscated by the DMV. The DMV is actually where this whole thing started. Shane had gone to the DMV to get his license renewed. He was then taken into a back room where he was informed that he was dead. That kind of news will totally ruin your day.
Shane said, “They were interrogating me saying I was deceased, and told me they were going to call the cops on me, confiscated my ID, so I left.” How crazy is that?! Shane lost his job and hasn’t been able to find a new one because companies can’t hire legally dead people. He and his wife have had to move in with his parents to try and save money.
There are a lot of things that happen if you’re declared dead. Attorney Mark Bringardner said in the Newsweek article, “So, that will present a whole host of challenges that can’t be fixed overnight and will take several months if not longer, to fix between submitting the paperwork to the social security administration, as well as the credit score company to restore your credit.”
The crazy thing is, this happens more often than you think. Mark Bringardner said, “It’s estimated this happens between 6,000 to 12,000 times a year or more, so that’s roughly 20 to 30 people a day. Shane has been to the Social Security office multiple times to get this issue solved. So far nothing has worked.
