Man Shot During Hours-Long Standoff in Burke County
A Baltimore, Maryland man with multiple felony convictions is in custody in Burke County following a nearly five-hours-long standoff with law enforcement that ended overnight in Waynesboro.
Investigators say 33-year-old Kevin McCardell allegedly assaulted the mother of his two young children at her home in the 100 block of Southside Drive. After being held against her will, Rebecca Crews escaped and notified authorities . Burke County authorities said that’s when they learned McCardell had outstanding felony warrants stemming from a domestic violence incident earlier this year in Baltimore.
Deputies went to the home on Southside Drive and were met at the door by McCardell, who brandished a pistol and threatened deputies while holding the two children, ages 1 and 2.
A news release from the Burke County Sheriff’s Office says McCardell fired a total of three shots, threatening to kill deputies. “A SWAT Team and Hostage Negotiation Team deployed a distraction device and McCardell again, while holding his children in his arms, brandished a handgun and pointed it at the team, using the children as a human shield.” A deputy fired his weapon, striking McCardell in the leg. He was taken into custody at 3:30 a.m. and was taken to Augusta University Medical Center. No other injuries were reported.
McCardell faces numerous felony charges including False Imprisonment, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime, and Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer.
