Austin talks about Richard Globensky, the most infamous criminal in Augusta National history, and his recent sentencing.
Austin: He is beyond a shadow of a doubt the most infamous criminal in Augusta National history, Richard Globensky, the former staffer at Augusta National, who apparently got away with stealing over $5,000,000 worth of Masters memorabilia right out from underneath, tournament management and the membership over there over a thirteen year period.
Just this past week, the judgment came down from the court in Chicago, Federal Court, the most limp-wristed, ridiculous, and horribly, horribly unjust sentence in that case as possible. Thank goodness no locals had anything to do with this. Some federal judge in Chicago and some US attorney in Chicago had the actual audacity to sign to this agreement. But the Putin head who spent thirteen years stealing over $5,000,000 worth of memorabilia ended up with a jail sentence, get this, of one year and one day.
That’s right. A thirteen-year crime spree that netted him millions of dollars tax-free, all while, by the way, supposedly making a living, earning a paycheck from Augusta National. And he walks away with just one year in prison. Now a fine. He’s supposed to pay restitution, but good luck doing that.
This guy got to live like a king every day for thirteen years stealing millions of dollars from Augusta National, and yet the jail sentence one year and one day. I would get more time than that if I went in the face of the judge that issued the sentence. How in the world is that any kind of detriment or not detriment? There’s no way in the world that’s a just sentence. It’s not a detriment to the crime.
It doesn’t discourage anyone from committing a similar crime. Thirteen years of star-studded fun, money out the ears, and you walk away with one year incarceration. We had to do better. Our entire criminal justice system is upside down. They say that he cooperated by turning in some of the folks that he was supplying the stolen goods to.
Folks, that’s ridiculous. There’s no way in the world this most notorious thief in local sports memorabilia history could ever walk away with such a ridiculous slap on the wrist. Come on, judicial system. Do better. Like I said, thank God in heaven nobody local was connected to that hideous plea deal up in Chicago.
